Bradenton area sees first pedestrian fatality of 2023 after 76-year-old man hit by car

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating Manatee County’s second traffic fatality of the new year.

A 76-year-old Bradenton man was struck and killed about 9:10 a.m. Monday by a vehicle after he attempted to walk across Lockwood Ridge Road at its intersection with 57th Avenue East, FHP said in a news release.

He died after walking into the direct path of a sedan, FHP said. The accident scene is near the Gold Tree 55-plus community.

The impact threw him onto the windshield of the car, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car was an 80-year-old Sarasota woman, who suffered minor injuries.

Manatee County recorded is first traffic fatality at 3:33 a.m. Sunday in a two-car crash near the intersection of U.S. 41 and Buckeye Road.

An 80-year-old Bradenton woman died when she was thrown from a Jeep Wrangler.

The FHP traffic homicide unit is investigating both fatal crashes.
