29-year-old dies, one seriously injured in morning car crash in East Manatee County

A driver who lost control of his car going around a curve was killed and his passenger seriously injured in a crash Friday morning in east Manatee County, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

It happened around 6 a.m. on County Road 675, also known as Rutland Road, about 0.3 miles south of Jim Davis Road.

A 29-year-old man from Bradenton was driving a Chevy Sonic sedan northbound with a 24-year-old man from Palmetto as a passenger.

The driver took a left curve in the road “at a high rate of speed,” FHP said, went onto the east shoulder then overcorrected to try to get back on the road.

He lost control, and the car continued onto the west shoulder where it hit a guardrail and a warning sign, then went over a concrete culvert and “became airborne” and came to rest in a ditch.

The driver was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The passenger was taken to HCA Florida Blake Hospital with “incapacitating” injuries.

The FHP Homicide Unit is investigating the crash.
