Palmetto man dies a week after major crash on U.S. 41 in Manatee County, FHP says
A 67-year-old Palmetto man has died from his injuries in a car crash in Manatee County earlier this month, Florida Highway Patrol said in an update on Monday.
The crash happened shortly after noon on Jan. 21 at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Bayshore Road, north of Palmetto and east of Terra Ceia Preserve State Park.
Traffic investigators say that the Palmetto man was stopped at a stop sign in his sedan in the eastbound lane of Bayshore Road. The man then attempted to cross U.S. 41, but he violated the right-of-way of an oncoming sedan traveling southbound, FHP said.
The front of the southbound sedan hit the left side of the Palmetto man’s vehicle. The force of the impact sent both cars into the median, FHP said.
A 16-year-old driving the southbound sedan and a 15-year-old in the passenger’s seat, both from Palmetto, were seriously injured. The Palmetto man was also seriously injured. A helicopter was called to the scene for medical transport.
Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Manatee County EMS and the North River Fire District also responded to the crash, which temporarily shut down all lanes of U.S. 41.
The Palmetto man died at Blake Medical Center on Friday, troopers said.
