UPDATE: The Sunshine Skyway reopened at 12:20 p.m. after visibility improved enough to allow vehicles to cross the bridge.

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge was closed to traffic because of heavy fog early Tuesday, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The bridge was closed about 5 a.m. according to the FHP website.

If heading from Bradenton to the Tampa Bay area, alternate routes include Interstate 75 and U.S. 41.
