Tampa Bay man dies after his own truck rolls over him
INDIAN SHORES -- A 40-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a bizarre accident in Indian Shores.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the man died when his 2003 Nissan Frontier pickup truck rolled backwards over him.
Investigators said the still unnamed man was driving on 197th Avenue just east of Gulf Boulevard when he pulled off the road into a parking space.
Witnesses told deputies that the man got out of the truck, appeared to be lost and was looking around when his vehicle began to roll backwards.
Deputies say the driver quickly ran back to his car and got partially into the driver's seat in an attempt to stop the vehicle.
According to the witness, the driver's left foot got caught in the driver's side front tire, and the vehicle continued to roll, which pulled him out of the vehicle and knocked him to the ground.
The driver's side front tire then rolled over the driver, pinning him to the ground.
Witnesses attempted to use pieces of wood as wedges to lift the car up and free the driver. Another witness brought a vehicle jack and used it to attempt to lift the vehicle off the driver.
Suncoast Fire Rescue personnel responded and used a jack to lift the car high enough to free the driver.
The man was pronounced dead at 4:10 p.m. at the scene.
