MANATEE -- A 19-year-old man was killed Monday morning when he crashed into the rear of a dump truck on State Road 70 near Myakka City, closing the highway for several hours, Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash, which happened about 7:30 a.m., was just east of M&J Road, according to a news release.

Quenten Tyler Cox, of Ona, was heading east on State Road 70 in a 1997 Ford F250 pickup truck when he hit the truck, which was pulling on to the south shoulder.

After the impact, Cox's vehicle traveled across both lanes of State Road 70, coming to rest on a grassy shoulder, FHP said.

The driver of a westbound car avoided colliding with the pickup truck by swerving off the highway and onto the shoulder, according to the report.

There were no other injuries reported.

State Road 70 was reopened to traffic at about 12:30 p.m.
