Bradenton woman in critical condition after being struck on bicycle

DESOTO -- A 29-year-old Bradenton woman is in critical condition after she was hit by a car while riding her bicycle in DeSoto County Sunday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The woman was not wearing a helmet as she rode her bike northbound on SW Shores Avenue just south of SW Angus Street at 9:05 p.m., according to a release. A 22-year-old man was driving northbound behind her.

She did not have reflectors on her bike and was not wearing any type of reflective material, the driver told troopers. Another unknown vehicle southbound on the same road had its bright lights activated, making it difficult to see, the driver said.

The front of the driver's vehicle struck the rear of the bicycle, critically injuring the woman and causing no injuries to the driver.

The woman was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. Troopers said there are no charges at this time.
