44-year-old bicyclist in critical condition after crash in downtown Bradenton
BRADENTON -- A bicyclist is in critical condition after he improperly crossed First Street on Tuesday morning and was hit by a car, according to the Bradenton Police Department.
The driver of a Hyundai was southbound on First Street approaching the intersection with Manatee Avenue West at 8:30 a.m. when the bicyclist tried to cross First Street from east to west, according to Capt. William Fowler of the Bradenton Police Department.
The crash caused a traffic standstill on the Desoto Bridge on Tuesday morning. Southbound traffic had a green light at the time and the cyclist was not crossing at an intersection. Fowler said it is unknown how fast the car was traveling.
Fowler said the bicyclist was taken to Blake Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition. He has multiple injuries.
Fowler said it is an open investigation but they are not looking into charges at this time.
