Steel mailbox part of legacy for Ed Deane

When kids trashed mailboxes along Riverview Boulevard years ago, Ed Deane called their bluff.

“He built a mailbox that could not be destroyed,” Karren Shupe said of her father, who passed Tuesday at 86.

Deane went to the family’s business, Deane Machine, made a steel mailbox, then mounted it in deep cement base.

“The house is gone, but that mail box is still there,” Shupe said.

n Kenneth J. Hunsader was awarded Professor of the Year at the University of South Alabama’s Mitchell College of Business.

The award is based on teaching, research and service to the university.

A Ph.D. in finance, he is the son of Joyce Hunsader and the late Robert Hunsader.

n Lee Middle’s Hannah “Banana” Henderson is 12 and grandpa Itzy Cutler is 76. Cheers from Marley, Andy, Cas and Katie.

n Coach Shea Whidden’s Palmetto Dazzlers dance team will hold a car wash at Steve White’s Auto Service, 824 Eighth Ave. W., Palmetto, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday to help raise funds for nationals.

n Pfc. JoJo Kinnan is in Afghanistan, a radio operator and driver for the 1st Battalion, 506th regiment HQ.

n Mike and Jaymie Carter are wed 25 years Sept. 14.

n The MHS Class of 2000’s 10th reunion is Oct. 1-2. There will be a barbecue and Hurricanes home game against Lakewood Ranch, followed by a Saturday picnic and cocktail party.
