No-swim advisory issued for Palma Sola. Fecal bacteria reaches high levels again
Update: Another no-swim advisory was issued Friday, July 1, 2022.
The Florida Department of Health on Friday issued a no-swim advisory for Palma Sola South — on state road 64 near Palma Sola Bay in Bradenton — because of the high level of bacteria in the water.
The department received test results taken at Palma Sola South on June 6 and June 8 that show an increase in enterococci bacteria which may cause human disease, infections or rashes.
Increased enterococci bacteria levels make the water unsafe for swimmers and those who fish.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Enterococci are indicators of the presence of fecal material in water and, therefore, of the possible presence of disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.
These pathogens can sicken swimmers and others who use rivers and streams for recreation or eat raw shellfish or fish.
Palma Sola South no-swim advisory is in effect until the water meets EPA’s safety regulations.
The county did not offer a timeline for when they expect the water to be safe again. This is the second advisory issued in Palm Sola this year because of increased levels of the bacteria found in the water.
The first came in April.
