Two students are being “excluded from school” in Sarasota County after they came in contact with a patient who has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

“Out of an abundance of caution, and for the safety of our thousands of families and students in Sarasota County, we wanted to share that two students in our district have been excluded from school by the Florida Department of Health,” Sarasota County Schools posted on Facebook Monday afternoon.

The names of the students and the schools they attended will not be released to the public, according to the release. There are no positive cases of the novel coronavirus in Sarasota County, and Department of Health officials believe the contact did not occur in the county.

Both students are healthy, the release said, but they will be excluded from school and monitored by DOH officials.

“If these students have not developed further illness and are well, they will be released by the DOH and return to school,” the post said.

State officials announced late Saturday night that an 81-year-old Manatee County woman has tested presumptive positive for the COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus. It was the second case reported in Manatee County.
