Journalism Next: Bayshore High School in Bradenton rejects shaky image

BRADENTON -- When most people hear about Bayshore High School, the negative can outweigh the positive.

Within this forest of shaky perception, however, a growing grove of outstanding clubs, activities and people can be found. Activities and organizations include dual enrollment, Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Reading Day and the National Honor Society.

Of the many outstanding programs and activities going on at the south Manatee County high school, one of the most popular is dual enrollment, which lets capable students take State College of Florida classes at either the BHS campus or at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota. Dual enrollment students take college classes and earn college credit. Students can graduate high school with an associate's degree.

"We have had numerous students who tell us later how grateful they are that they participated in early college, not only for the college credits, but because their experience made their transition to full-time college easier," said Prentiss Herron, guidance counselor and early college coordinator for dual enrollment.

JROTC is a military class and program taken by many BHS students. They must learn to show respect, dedication and strength.

Some have risen to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Many JROTC students join the U.S. Army after graduation. Lt. Col. Antonio Vegan and Sgt. 1st Class James Watnes provide leadership for BHS cadets.

Every year, on the day before winter break, Bayshore has Reading Day where students can pay to stay in the library and read all day. Students get a chance to expand their knowledge, experience a new story and indulge their love of reading.

Bayshore has competitive sports and academics teams.

The A-Team is an after-

school activity where students compete against other schools in academic wit. Students need a vast knowledge of mathematics, science, social studies, humanities and geography to be on the A-Team. Science teacher James Byrne leads and advises the team.

The theater program, under the direction of Brendan Murphy, also sets a high standard.

National Honor Society is a students organization requiring high grades, leadership, citizenship and character. In just one induction ceremony, the BHS NHS chapter grew from two seniors to more than 50 students. The chapter has already participated in opportunities for students to earn volunteer hours and help the community. Most recently they have read to a local elementary school. English teacher Paul Parker is the faculty adviser.

Some people who may not know much about Bayshore High School hold onto incorrect perceptions. Students and staff, however, say the impressive list of activities is more indicative of the community jewel at Bayshore.
