New College of Florida President Don O’Shea was named president of the Southern University Conference at the group’s April meeting in Williamsburg, Va., the school announced Wednesday.

The Southern University Conference is an association of more than 40 predominantly liberal arts institutions, whose members meet annually to discuss education issues and initiatives on their campuses. It was founded in 1924 with 33 members.

The theme this year was “The Promise and Purpose of the Presidency,” focused on the challenges of the role of the college president in times of change. Speakers included presidents Gordon Gee of University of West Virginia, Taylor Reveley of College of William & Mary, Teresa Sullivan of University of Virginia and Belle Wheelan of the accrediting agency, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The next annual meeting will be in Sarasota.
