Southeast wins 11th state broadcast news title in row

BRADENTON -- For the 11th year in a row, the broadcast news program at Southeast High School won the SkillsUSA state championship.

The students competed from April 24-27 in Lakeland. The winning team included Alexis Federico, Sofia Aztrodt, Naomi Rafi and Johnny Cromwell.

The students go on to the national conference in Kentucky in June, hoping to bring home the school's sixth national championship in the last seven years.

Willis Elementary student wins weather poster contest

BRADENTON -- A fifth-grade student at Robert Willis Elementary School won a Florida Division of Emergency Management poster contest recently.

Viola Szalkai and her classmates at Willis in Lakewood Ranch were visited Thursday by Professor Tinkermeister, a character from the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Szalkai was selected as the 2016-Region 6 winner of the Severe Weather Awareness Week Poster Contest.

Manatee County Emergency Management Chief Don Hermey, and Troy Nelson, School District of Manatee County manager of security, told students about the importance of an emergency preparation plan.

Szalkai won an iPad Mini. and her teacher, Cinda Byrd, won an office supply store gift card. Each student in Viola's class, along with the school's main office, received a NOAA Weather Radio. Szalkai was one of seven winners in Florida; 1,000 students entered the contest.

SCF Traffic Safety Institute gets high marks in audit

BRADENTON -- The Traffic Safety Institute at the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota has received straight A's from the state for its audit report.

Auditors from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles driver education and DUI programs found the Traffic Safety Institute compliant in every section reviewed, including education, organizational structure, financial audit, client files, client evaluation, treatment referrals, personnel policies and special supervision services.

SCF's Traffic Safety Institute is one of the largest in the state and the only one affiliated with a college.

King, Nolan Middle health students bring home awards

BRADENTON -- King and Nolan middle school health students recently competed in a state leadership conference for Florida Health Occupations Students of America at World Marriott Center in Orlando for more than 3,000 students.

Brian Ackles, a King eighth-grade student, placed third in the state in medical spelling. Tamara Clemann, Ella Bisio, Reagan Nevin, and Alyssa Ely placed second in state in team health education and qualified to attend the International Leadership Conference this June in Nashville, Tenn.

Nolan students Jason Breiner and Gabby Vasquez-Crus placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in medical terminology. A team consisting of Megan Bradley, Kelsey Le, Sarah Malickson, Nicolette Ngov and Anneliese Pruim placed fourth in public health. Sofia Pagan-Rodriquez and Ariel Gates placed third and fourth, respectively, in extemporaneous health poster.
