Recycled fashion show scheduled for April 16
BRADENTON -- Nearly 30 Manatee County teens have registered for Manatee County Public Libraries' third annual Teen Recycled Fashion Show from 1-3 p.m. April 16 in the Downtown Central Library.
In collaboration with Keep Manatee Beautiful, Bright House and The Friends of the Library, the popular event gives teenagers the opportunity to live a day in the life of a fashion designer or model. Contestants make their own original fashion using recycled or repurposed materials and present their creation on the runway in front of an audience. A panel of judges will select a winner based on creativity, presentation and use of recycled materials.
This month, the Teen Recycled Fashion Show won the Florida Library Association's Betty Davis Miller Youth Services Award, which recognizes innovative or outstanding youth programs.

New College students work with immigrant farmers
SARASOTA -- Four New College students spent their spring break on the farms near Apopka in Central Florida to better understand immigrant farmers.
They spent two days with immigrant farmers, living in their homes, sharing meals and working a half-day in the fields, weeding rows of celery plants.
It was the culmination of a tutorial class at New College about immigration, agriculture, social justice, philanthropy and social services.
First-year student Cassandra Manz said the experience was unforgettable.
"The hardest part of the work was realizing that this, working in the fields, wasn't my life, but this was other people's lives," Manz wrote. "Most of the time, illegal immigrants work on the farms because they cannot work anywhere else. I asked one woman if she liked the farm work. She said it made her tired and hurt her back. She said she has two children. One of her kids is my little sister's age."
