Manatee school district hosts Read Across Manatee
BRADENTON -- Miller Elementary hosted a number of district leaders, community members and other elected officials Thursday as part of the weeklong Read Across Manatee celebration.
Read Across Manatee, which highlights Literacy Week, invites members of the school district and the community into Manatee County classrooms to read to children.
Jan 25-29 marks Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!. The theme for this year's Florida Department of Education-sponsored event is "Literacy Changes Our World." The School District of Manatee County is working with the Suncoast Campaign for Grade-
Level Reading, to improve the statistics of students reading below grade-level within Manatee County.
Other school celebrations included:
Kinnan Elementary's library remained open until 7 p.m. on Monday. Parents were able to use the extra hours to read with their children or check out books from the library.
Lizzie Brown, an actress from Longboat Key and member of the Screen Actors Guild, brought reading "to life" at Sea Breeze Elementary School Wednesday.
Ballard Elementary School hosted "Booknic Day." Parents, grandparents and guardians joined students inside or outside for a picnic and reading time on Thursday.
Palmetto Elementary School will host an event called, "I Dream of Reading" on Friday. Students may wear their pajamas to school. They will participate in a poster contest (Grades K-2) and a writing contest (Grades 3-5).
Gene Witt Elementary School will be holding a special event Feb, 4 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The "Literacy Night" is to bring students, staff and families together for a night of stories. There will be refreshments, extended hours to shop the school's book fair and teachers in four classrooms reading their favorite books.
