Manatee County School District’s new superintendent Jason Wysong laced up his sneakers and started the first day of school with a whirlwind tour Thursday.
An hour before the sun rose, Wysong started his day at the Matzke Complex as the school buses fired up their engines to take students to the district’s 66 schools.
Wysong boarded one of the buses and rode to Palmetto Elementary School, which he said he immensely enjoyed. “Everyone should try it!”
Next stop was Manatee High School where he visited several classrooms and spoke to students and teachers.
Principal Sharon Scarbrough led Wysong the long way to classes through air-conditioned corridors to beat the outdoor heat.
The first day of school was a hot one for students across the Tampa Bay area, with record heat and drought conditions.
Manatee County was in its fifth day of heat advisories, with more likely. Wednesday set a new daily high record of 96 degrees in Bradenton-Sarasota, with a heat index above 110 possible.
