‘North River High School’ has nice ring to it, board decides
North River High School could be coming to Parrish in 2019.
On Tuesday, the School Board of Manatee County completed the next-to-last round of choosing a name for the new high school the district is building in Parrish by narrowing a list 60 to the top four.
North River High School was the name earning the most votes. Parrish High School — or some variation of that name — came in second, and Fort Hamer and Oak Hill high schools tied for third. The board will make its final selection during a public hearing at an Aug. 8 board meeting.
Oak Hill, suggested by board chairman Charlie Kennedy, was the original name of Parrish. Kennedy said he liked it because it eliminated the problem of having two PHS’s — Palmetto High School and Parrish High School — in the district.
Each board member listed their top three names from a list of names nominated by community members during a process that was open during March and April.
