Are you emotionally intelligent? If not, this new course at USFSM could be for you

A high IQ might not be as valuable as a high EQ.

EQ — a term for a person’s emotional intelligence — indicates how well a person interacts with others and navigates the complexities of social interactions.

Students at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee can learn about their own Students at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee can learn about their own EQ and bolster their ability to work with others in a new course being offered this fall through USFSM’s Office of Professional and Continuing Education. “Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace” is a two-credit course open to both full-time and part-time working professional students.

Recent studies have shown people with high IQ’s are outperformed by lower IQ’s 70 percent of the time, reversing the assumption that the top performers always have the most intelligence, said Travis Bradbury, co-author of the best seller “Emotional Intelligence 2.0.”

Cynthia Howard, a registered nurse with a master’s degree in clinical psychology and a PhD in human development, will be teaching the two-credit course.

Course topics include the dimensions of emotional intelligence; self-awareness and how to develop it; the impact of emotional intelligence on communication and relationship building; and the value of emotional intelligence and your leadership potential.
