State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota students have taken an early lead in Brain Bowl tournaments this year.
The SCF Brain Bowl team of David Espinal, Damien Bobrek, Lacey Anderson and Nate Havlik won the Erik Korray Brain Bowl Tournament at College of Central Florida in Ocala after defeating Chipola College in a head-to-head match. SCF and Chipola College ended the tournament with 9-1 records.
Brain Bowl is an academic competition with teams of up to four players buzzing in on questions covering literature, music, art, social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, philosophy and religion. Florida has traditionally had the strongest teams in the country, consistently placing in the top ranks nationally, according to officials.
The team competes Nov. 10-11 in the Delta Burke Tournament at Valencia College in Orlando. SCF won that tournament two years ago, and placed second to a New College team last year.
