Man arrested after nearly 6-hour standoff with police in Holmes Beach
A man was charged Tuesday with aggravated assault with a firearm after refusing to leave a home and threatening to shoot his mother, according to the Holmes Beach Police Department.
At 9 a.m. Tuesday, an arrest warrant was issued for 30-year-old Gerald Alois Harles II, who refused to come out of a residence in the 500 block of 68th Street from 4:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. According to Holmes Beach police, the mother called saying her 30 year-old son was drunk and tearing up the house.
As officers were at the front door speaking with the mother, the son, Harles, came toward the front door with a shotgun or rifle and racked the gun as if preparing to fire. The officers took cover behind patrol vehicles, according to a release. Police said Harles refused to come out or let his parents out of the house. He also stated he would shoot the police before going to jail and threatened to shoot his mother .
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist with the Hostage Negotiation Team and SWAT, according to the release.
Police said the parents left the residence unharmed around 6 a.m., but Harles refused to come out and would not answer the phone.
While the SWAT team was preparing to go into the residence, Harles was contacted via the telephone, according to the release. Around 10 a.m., Harles came out of the residence and was taken into custody.
Harles washeld in Manatee County jail on $50,000 bond, according to the sheriff’s office website
