Credit card skimmer found at Holmes Beach gas station

HOLMES BEACH -- A credit skimmer, which can steal account information about customers, was found this week on a gas pump at a Holmes Beach gas station, according to police.

Officers Monday responded to the Citgo station at 3015 Gulf Drive, after a state inspector found the device.

"The owner of the store said that the pump was not working correctly on Saturday morning, May 7, so he placed a 'cash only' sign on the pump," police said in a news release. "The skimmer was retrieved from pump 1."

The owner also found that the panel to pump 5 was open, "so it is possible that a skimmer had been placed in that pump and retireved by the suspect already," police said.

The skimmer that was retrieved will be taken to a crime lab to be processed for possible fingerprints and DNA evidence, police said.

Anyone who finds that their credit cards or bank accounts were compromised after using the credit card readers at the pumps can call Detective Sgt. Brian Hall at 941-778-COPS.
