Bradenton man arrested a year after shooting
MANATEE -- A man was arrested Saturday on charges he and two other men shot at each other repeatedly in Bradenton last year after an incident during which a 10-year-old was pushed over on his bike, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
Otis Johnson, one of the alleged shooters, pushed over a 10-year-old boy on his bike on May 4 which injured the boy's foot, according to an arrest report. The boy's brother, who lives in the 300 block of 58th Avenue East in Bradenton, confronted Johnson the following Saturday and eventually left the neighborhood for a couple of hours after the argument.
The victim returned home and saw Johnson and Earnest Calhoun, 28, standing in his front yard holding pistols, arguing with the victim's sister and 10-year-old brother, according to the report. The victim then came up and started arguing with Calhoun and Johnson, who pointed their guns at him.
The victim told deputies he reached for a gun in his waistband out of fear, and his sister got in between Johnson and Calhoun and the victim and screamed, "Don't shoot my brother!"
Johnson told Calhoun to shoot the victim and Calhoun started firing, according to the report. Johnson then pushed the sister out of the way and also started shooting. The victim ran away and shot at both Calhoun and Johnson as he retreated. He eventually ran into his house and was not injured.
Deputies located 14 bullet casings in the area and found surveillance video of the shooting that showed the victim exchanging gunfire with at least one other person.
Johnson was arrested on May 23, 2015, but information on Calhoun that led to his arrest was just received over the last weekend, according to sheriff's office spokesman Dave Bristow. Johnson is no longer being held in the Manatee County jail.
Calhoun was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. He is being held in the Manatee County jail on bonds totaling $82,500. He has previously been charged with attempted murder in 2007, concealing a firearm, motor vehicle theft and sale of crack cocaine.
