Texas man charged with trafficking more than $100,000 worth cocaine in Sarasota

SARASOTA -- A Texas man is facing charges after deputies discovered about $100,000 worth of cocaine during a traffic stop on Thursday afternoon, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Jose Julian Perez, 37, is charged with trafficking cocaine. He is being held without bond at the Sarasota County jail.

Perez was stopped around 4:30 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 75, just south of Clark Road in Sarasota, according to reports.

After a K9 detected narcotics in a trash bag in the bed of the truck, Perez was asked if he had anything illegal in the truck and he denied that there was. The deputy searched the cab of the pickup truck and the bed.

In the front, driver-side portion of the bed of the truck, a black trash bag was found and inside there were three individually packaged blocks wrapped heavily in duct tape, according to the report.

A field test was done on the more than six pounds of cocaine and it tested.

"Perez claimed no knowledge of the packages and requested legal counsel," the arrest report stated.

The investigation remains ongoing.
