Caught on video: Sarasota man charged with stealing purses from Siesta Key nightclub

SARASOTA -- A Sarasota man has been charged with stealing purses from a Siesta Key nightclub last month, according to the Sarasota Sheriff's Office.

Raymond Consul, 23, was arrested last week and charged with two counts of grand theft. He was released from the Sarasota County jail on bonds totaling $3,000, according to the arrest report.

Deputies with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office tactical unit responded to Beach Club at 5151 Ocean Blvd. in Siesta Key after the club's management reported about six purses haven been stolen during the evening of Feb. 27, according to a news release. The club's surveillance video showed the suspect stealing two purses, one from the bar and another from the stage and then showed him walk into the men's bathroom. Several personal items from the two stolen purses were later found in that bathroom.

Through further investigation detectives, were able to identify Consul as the man in the videos, according to the report.

Consul's criminal history includes charges of drug possession, robbery and battery.

Detectives believe there may be more victims.

"The sheriff's office encourages citizens to lock up their valuables and be cognizant of their surroundings, especially in crowded areas during spring break," the release stated. "Do not leave personal items unattended and only take the necessities when you leave your home or hotel room."
