Five arrests made during DUI saturation patrol by Manatee County Sheriff's Office
MANATEE -- The Manatee County Sheriff's Office made five arrests as part of a countywide DUI saturation patrol beginning Friday night through early Saturday.
Deputies with the sheriff's office traffic unit saturated the county looking for drivers under the influence, which resulted in one DUI arrest.
The big bust of the night was speeding with 24 citations.
Four arrests were made on charges of driving without a driver's license, possession of marijuana, felony driving with a suspended license and an outstanding warrant.
Three citations for driving with a suspended license without knowledge and two court summons were issued.
Also, there were two move-over violations, one red-light violation, nine other traffic citations and 10 warnings.
More than 17,000 people are killed and 305,000 people injured annually by impaired drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The average DUI driver commits this violation 80 times per year or once every five nights, according to NHTSA.
National averages show an alcohol-related fatality occurs every 30 minutes. These incidents cost society more than $54 billion annually in lost productivity, medical expenses, damages, and other expenditures.
