Manatee County sheriff's canine helps capture fleeing suspect

HERALD STAFF REPORT

BRADENTON -- A police canine put the bite on a fugitive who fled from a Manatee County Sheriff's Office deputy about 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Bradenton, leading to the suspect's apprehension, according to a news release.

The deputy spotted Willie J. Burton, 31, who had active warrants for his arrest, in the 5700 block of Seventh Street East, Bradenton, the release said.

The deputy attempted to take Burton into custody, and a foot chase ensued through several yards, the report said. Another deputy with canine officer Boey responded and tracked Burton hiding behind a shed.

Boey bite Burton on his left bicep, and "immediate compliance was gained," the report said.

Burton was treated at a local hospital before being transported to jail. He faces a charge of resisting arrest.
