DAYTONA BEACH -- A 23-year-old Palmetto man was one of three Bethune-Cookman University students shot around 1 a.m. Saturday, including one fatally.

Just before 5 p.m., shooting suspect Lamont Postell Jr. of Miami, known by the nickname "Cornbread," surrendered to Daytona Beach police.

Postell is the primary suspect in the fatal shooting of one of the school's football players, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Postell, 23, pulled a gun during a fight at a party at the Indigo Lake Golf Club, police reported.

Postell reportedly shot 23-year-old student, Don'Kevious Johnson, who was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center where he died, according to an incident report. Johnson is listed on the B-CU athletic website as a linebacker for the Wildcats.

Postell shot two other students:

Tre Jamal Williams of Palmetto, 21, was shot in the back.

Justine Cunningham, age unavailable, was shot in the head.

Officers reported finding the two lying on the ground.

Williams and Cunningham were transported to Halifax. Cunningham is in critical

condition and Williams is stable, police reported.

Williams is the son of a Bradenton Herald employee who posted her relief on Facebook.

"I'm so thankful to God, family and friends. Prayers for my son," wrote Angela Lindsey Williams. "He was one of these students who was shot earlier this morning. He's out of the hospital doing OK, but very sore. The others weren't so lucky. One died and the young lady is in critical condition. Still need prayers for them. Praying ..."

A witness told police he was with Johnson and a group of friends in the clubhouse when Postell and a group of men started arguing and then fighting with them.

As Johnson started to walk away from the brawl, a witness saw Postell pull out a handgun, records show. The witness said two or three gunshots followed, police reported.

Police said Postell is not a student at the university. He is being held on a first-degree murder charge along with two counts attempted murder.

B-CU said in a release it is offering grief counseling for students in need. School officials said Johnson was a sophomore who studied psychology with a 3.05 grade-point average.

"At Bethune-Cookman University, our first priority is the safety and wellbeing of our students ," the release said. "This is a very unfortunate incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones and fellow classmates of these students."

This is the latest violent incident involving B-CU students.

Two students were fatally shot and another wounded in September at an apartment complex after an argument about rent money turned deadly. The suspect in the shooting, student York Zed Bodden, hanged himself in a Miami jail call after he was captured.

A shootout on campus last year also left three bystanders injured after two men fired shots at one another from vehicles.
