Sarasota man charged with manslaughter after Thanksgiving Day fistfight leads to death

SARASOTA -- A Sarasota man was charged with manslaughter Thursday after a victim died due to injuries dealt by the suspect in a fight, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called to the 2700 block of Monterey Street in Sarasota at 4:17 a.m. on Nov. 26, Thanksgiving Day, to investigate a fight, according to a release. Detectives learned Julio Santos, 33, had been at the home with his girlfriend and two other people, drinking and preparing food for the holiday, when he and 34-year-old Ryan Jurasin started to fight.

Witnesses said Jurasin fell to the ground after throwing one punch and Santos continued to punch the victim's head. Santos' girlfriend eventually pulled him off Jurasin and took him home. When she returned hours later, she told deputies she found Jurasin still laying on the ground with one of his eyes swollen shut and blood coming from his ears.

Jurasin was taken to the Sarasota Memorial Hospital with what doctors say were multiple complex facial fractures, orbital fractures, significant brain damage and a broken jaw. Jurasin's condition deteriorated and he died in January.

Santos was charged with manslaughter and is currently being held without bond.
