Sarasota police make arrest in Jan. 15 homicide

SARASOTA -- A man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the Jan. 15 death of William B. Shipp, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

Rufus Adams, 34, was arrested at noon Wednesday during a traffic stop in the 5900 block of North Shade Avenue, Sarasota. Police worked with the U.S. Marshals Service's Florida Regional Fugitive Taskforce on the arrest, Sarasota police said in a news release.

At approximately 6 a.m. Jan. 15, officers responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in the 1500 block of 25th Street. When they arrived, they found Shipp with gunshot wounds. Shipp was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he died several hours later. police said.

The motive and case remains under investigation, according to police.
