1 dead, 1 hurt in shooting in Bradenton

MANATEE -- A 26-year-old man was shot to death and one other person was injured early Friday afternoon during what may have been a shootout with the suspect, according Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube.

Between 12:45 p.m. and 1 p.m., deputies responded to a report of gunfire in the 500 block of 60th Avenue Terrace West, Steube said.

Julio Tellez, 26, was shot to death at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.

Steube said deputies found shell casings on the street and in front of the residence.

Tellez was found dead just inside the front door of the residence. Authorities are unclear if Tellez was shot in the residence or shot outside and died inside.

One other person was shot

in the forearm and transported to a hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries, Steube said.

An abandoned car thought to be connected to the shooting has been located, according to the sheriff's office.

"That location is under surveillance right now," Steube said.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence where the shooting happened, and the scene was being processed Friday afternoon.

Deputies were interviewing individuals who might have information about the shooting. No possible motive has been disclosed.

Steube said there was no apparent connection between the shooting on 60th Avenue Terrace West, and a double-slaying earlier in the day about two miles away on 11th Street East.

Steube called the first day of the year -- in which three people were shot to death in two separate incidents -- depressing.

"We live in a crazy society, is what it tells us. It's very depressing that people resort to using guns and violence when they have disagreements," Steube said. "It seems like people today say, 'Well let's go get a gun and let's shoot people.' It's disturbing, very disturbing."

Steube said additional law enforcement would be in the area of the residence and other areas thought to be related overnight and through the weekend.
