BRADENTON -- Officers used a Taser on a man who reached for a broom handle during a domestic violence-related arrest at 9:17 p.m. Christmas Eve, according to the Bradenton Police Department.

Johnel Johnson, 25, wife told police an argument escalated when Johnson pushed her with two hands on her chest, knocking her off balance. Police said the victim was not injured and refused to sign a complaint affidavit.

Johnson reportedly refused officer commands to stand and put his hands behind his back. When he stood up, he refused to put his hands behind his back.

Johnson then clenched his fists as if he was going to become violent, police said.

As officers continued giving Johnson commands, he walked toward the door, according to the report. An officer grabbed Johnson's right arm, but he yanked it free and squared off at officers.

When the same officer tried to take hold of his arm again, the suspect reportedly grabbed a broom as if he was going to use it as a weapon and the Taser was deployed.

Johnson was charged with domestic battery and resisting with violence, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office website. He was held in Manatee County jail on bonds totaling $5,000.
