Canadian bicyclist killed in crash with van; driver charged
EAST MANATEE -- A man riding a bicycle on a bike path in the Heritage Harbor development east of Interstate 75 was killed Sunday morning after being struck by a van.
Ronald Landry, 68, of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada, died at 7:38 a.m. after he was hit by a 2003 Honda Odyssey van, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Landry was biking east on Port Harbour Parkway in the bike path ahead of the van being driven by Mark Budzinski of Bradenton, the report states.
As the bicyclist and motorist both approached Cape Harbor Loop, the bicyclist continued in an easterly direction while the motorist attempted to make a right turn, according to the report.
The van struck the left side of the bike, the report said.
Landry was rushed to Blake Medical Center, where he died at 8:36 a.m., the report said.
Budzinski was charged with failure to use due care toward a bicyclist, according to the FHP.
