Tampa man charged with using counterfeit credit cards
SARASOTA -- A Tampa man was charged with using counterfeit credit cards to buy prepaid gift cards at four Walmart stores, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.
Gilberto Trujillo, 32, was arrested at 6:08 p.m. Saturday at a Walmart located at 17000 Tamiami Trail, North Port, according to a report. Loss prevention officers contacted Sarasota deputies Saturday evening to report that Trujillo used several credit cards, many of which were declined, to buy pre-paid gift cards at locations on Cattlemen Road in Sarasota and South Tamiami Trail in Osprey.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies went to the Venice Walmart to try to locate the suspect but learned he had just left so they continued south and found Trujillo in the parking lot of the North Port Walmart.
"Deputies stopped his vehicle and had him get out of his truck, but when they tried to take Trujillo into custody he pulled away, swung a closed fist at the deputy's head and then punched him in the chest," a release states. "Trujillo tried to run but was secured with the assistance of a North Port Police officer who arrived on scene."
The sheriff's office said that during a search of Trujillo's vehicle, deputies found 55 counterfeit credit cards and more than $11,000 in gift cards.
Trujillo was charged with possession of a counterfeit credit card and resisting arrest with violence. Deputies said Trujillo was released Sunday on $3,000 bond.
The investigation is ongoing, according to the sheriff's office.
