BRADENTON -- A 38-year-old woman was charged with beating a boy she was taking care of, according to the Bradenton Police Department.

The victim's mother told officers that her son told her that Shaney N. Washington on Friday cornered the boy on the front porch of the residence on the floor, stood over him and hit him with what appeared to be a belt or dog leash, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The boy screamed at Washington to stop, according to the report.

Police said the boy had visible marks on his lower left leg, and a cut to his forehead from him hitting his head on a fire extinguisher box. The victim also had a section of his braided hair ripped out of his head, police said.

Police also recovered a black dog leash.

Washington was arrested Saturday and charged with child abuse. She was being held on $7,500 bond at the Manatee County jail.
