Orange Ridge-Bullock Elementary official reports student dropped to 25 pounds; no charges against mother
MANATEE -- A school official reported that an elementary student who has medical issues has not been eating and has dropped to around 25 pounds. The Manatee County Sheriff's Office said they have not arrested the mother in the ongoing investigation.
The Orange Ridge-Bullock Elementary school official reported on Nov. 4 that the student has trouble eating due to his medical issues, and that he "has recently lost so much weight and is down to 25 to 26 pounds," a deputy's report states.
The mother reportedly refused to take the child to a doctor or place him on a feeding tube, though a doctor has told the mother to bring the child back within two weeks of the last appointment.
The official reported that the child "cries all day long," that he or she believes the child is in pain from malnourishment and that the child does not eat at school or at home, according to the report.
The deputy said he was unable to confirm whether the mother was taking the child to a doctor.
The mother was not arrested or charged in the incident, but Dave Bristow, spokesman for the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, said the investigation is ongoing and being handled both by criminal investigations and child protective services.
