St. Petersburg woman in critical condition after being shot in McDonald's drive-thru
ST. PETERSBURG -- A woman is in critical condition after she was shot Wednesday by a bondsman hunting a bail jumper at a St. Petersburg McDonald's, police say.
The shooting happened at the McDonald's drive-thru at 4585 34th St. S.
According to St. Petersburg police, a bondsman from Kyle's Quick Bonds followed Deveon Stokes, 26, and blocked him in at the drive-thru.
A second car pulled up alongside Stokes. That bondsman had his gun out, and he said the gun went off because of the movement of the cars.
The bullet hit a woman in the passenger seat, going through her hand into her head.
St. Petersburg police originally tweeted the woman suffered nonlife-threatening injuries, but said in a subsequent tweet she is in critical condition.
Stokes and another person weren't hit. Stokes was taken into custody.
The bondsman who opened fire is also in custody and cooperating with officers.
Police Chief Anthony Holloway says McDonald's is no place for a take-down, and the bondsman will be treated like any other citizen.
Stokes' warrant was for possession of cocaine with intent to sell, driving with a suspended or revoked license and failure to appear. He owed the bondsman about $21,000.
