Gov. Scott appoints Brian Iten of Parrish and Hunter Carroll of Sarasota to 12th Judicial Circuit Court

TALLAHASSEE -- Gov. Rick Scott announced the appointment Friday of Brian Iten of Parrish and Hunter Carroll of Sarasota to the 12th Judicial Circuit Court.

"I am confident Brian will continue his dedicated service to Florida families," Scott said in a press release. "His years of experience will serve him well on the 12th Judicial Circuit Court."

Iten, 49, has served as assistant state attorney for the 12th Circuit State Attorney's Office since 1994.

"I'm honored to have been appointed to the Circuit Court bench and it was a pleasure to have worked side by side with public safety professionals as the Assistant State Attorney for over two decades," Iten told the Herald Friday evening. "I look forward to further serving the 12th Circuit as a member of the judiciary."

Iten, an adjunct instructor at State College of Florida and instructor at the Law Enforcement Academy at Manatee Technical College, said he's been pursuing this next step in his career for the last decade.

"My wife is elated, and my children are enthused," Iten said of his family's reaction to the news.

Iten said he anticipates a lot of variety ahead because Circuit Court judges address many matters involving family, civil, probate and criminal law.

"I heard from many judges that seeing adoption from its inception to its successful conclusion is one of the most gratifying roles a judge can play," Iten said. "I certainly would like to be a part of those happy life events."

Iten is the 2014 recipient of the Jim Slater Award for Professionalism in the Practice of Criminal Law. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida and his law degree from Florida State University College of Law.

Iten fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Peter A. Dubensky. He anticipates beginning work sometime after Nov. 30, which is Dubensky's last day.

Carroll, 40, is an attorney with Matthews Eastmoore practicing commercial litigation.

He previously practiced with Carlton & Carroll from 2005-08 and with Carlton Fields from 2002-2005.

Carroll began his legal career as the senior staff attorney to Chief Justice Wells of the Florida Supreme Court.

Carroll is president-elect of the Sarasota County Bar Association and has been recognized in the Best Lawyers and Florida Legal Elite publications.

He received his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Florida. Carroll fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge James S. Parker.

"Hunter brings a broad understanding of the law and experience to the bench," Scott said in the release.
