Englewood man dies after crash on northbound Interstate 75 in Sarasota

SARASOTA -- An Englewood man died from his injuries after an Oct. 22 crash that was caused by a Pepsi truck and involved two other vehicles on northbound Interstate 75 in Sarasota, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Ricardo Gonzalez, 56, died Monday after being transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, according to FHP.

At 7:58 a.m. Oct. 22, Gonzalez and another driver, a 66-year-old Seffner man driving a Pepsi truck, were traveling northbound in the right lane of I-75 approaching University Parkway. According to a report, a third vehicle was also traveling northbound in the right lane of I-75, ahead of the other two vehicles.

"The semi-tractor trailer was unable to stop in time as he approached the congestion in all three lanes," FHP Trooper Kenn Watson said last week. "He struck the vehicle that was in front of him and then that vehicle struck the vehicle in front of it."

The crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.
