Standoff in Bradenton ends with man taken into custody
MANATEE -- A 73-year-old man was taken for evaluation Wednesday after deputies safely ended a standoff with him following his refusal to leave the home following an eviction, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
The man was taken into custody at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday.
The sheriff's office SWAT team was called just after 3 p.m. Wednesday to the home in the 300 block of Pearl Avenue near U.S. 41 when the man refused to leave, according to spokesman Dave Bristow.
The man called 911 to report a random shooting and was at his front door armed with a handgun and wearing a ballistic vest when deputies arrived. Deputies said the man talked about wanting to harm deputies and himself but refused to come outside.
"He also said he was upset because he was being evicted from his home," according to the release.
The sheriff's office said several rifles were visible inside the home. Negotiators convinced the man to exit his home and he was taken into custody.
