Palmetto driver overturns FedEx semi-truck on Interstate 4

ORLANDO -- FedEx said it's sorting through packages dumped when a semi-truck overturned on Interstate 4 about 11:50 p.m. Monday.

Driver Salvatore Anzelone, 45, of Palmetto attempted to change lanes on I-4 east near the Central Florida Parkway, but collided with 1998 Toyota Camry, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

He then lost control of the semi-truck and hit a guardrail, troopers said.

The front cab and trailer broke apart from a second trailer, which overturned. The cab landed on its side in a grassy median.

The second trailer flipped over a concrete bridge barrier, falling onto the Central Florida Parkway below, troopers said.

As it fell, the trailer ripped open and spilled packages across the road. Troopers said two vehicles on westbound I-4 were hit by flying debris and received minor damage.

Anzelone received minor injuries. He was cited for failing to maintain a single lane, FHP said.

The driver of the Camry, a 55-year-old Orlando woman, wasn't injured.

A FedEx spokesman said the company's "first concern is for the well-being" of the drivers involved and "we are grateful that there were no serious injuries."

"Public safety and care for our customers' packages are FedEx Ground's top priorities," an email from FedEx said. "We dispatched teams to quickly clean up the area. Every package and every item is removed from the area and carefully examined to determine what is damaged and what can be delivered as soon as possible."

TV footage of the wreckage showed torn boxes and packages of dog food, coffee and wrapping paper strewn across the road. The trailer looked like a mangled mess of metal that ripped open after it flipped.

It took crews more than 12 hours to clean up all the packages. Customers with questions can track their shipments on fedex.com or call 800-463-3339, the company said.
