Suspect in Sarasota homicide arrested in Tampa

SARASOTA -- A Tampa man wanted for the fatal shooting of a man during a botched drug deal in Sarasota was arrested Wednesday by the United States Marshals Service in Tampa, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

Diandrew Clarkson, 20, was found by the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Taskforce in a Tampa home and was arrested with the help of the Tampa Police Department, according to a news release.

He has been charged with murder in the shooting death Daniel Ortiz and is being held at the Hillsborough County jail.

On Monday evening, police responded to a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of 25th Street and Orange Avenue in Sarasota, according to a news release. Upon their arrival, they found Ortiz with a gunshot wound.

Ortiz, 44, was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Detectives believe the victim was shot at about 7 p.m. near the intersection of 25th Street and Leon Avenue. The victim they say then drove himself several hundred feet before crashing into a tree near the intersection of 25th Street and Orange Avenue.

Witnesses have told detectives that Clarkson and Ortiz had gotten into a dispute over a narcotics sale when Clarkson pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and fired one shot into the car, the release states.
