Man gets decades in prison in Manatee fentanyl trafficking case tied to Mexico
A judge sentenced a California man to decades in prison after a Manatee County jury convicted him of conspiring to traffic large quantities of fentanyl into Florida through a Mexico-based drug ring.
Cesar Alberto Caldera-Garcia, 40, received 30 years in prison after jurors found him guilty on April 22 of trafficking in fentanyl and conspiracy to traffic fentanyl, according to court records. Circuit Judge Frederick Mercurio also imposed more than $1.05 million in fines and court costs.
The sentence comes after prosecutors said an undercover investigation tied Caldera-Garcia to a larger trafficking scheme involving thousands of fentanyl pills, kilograms of powder and six-figure drug deals.
An attorney representing Caldera-Garcia declined to comment when reached by the Bradenton Herald.
Undercover investigation targets drug ring
The case stemmed from a monthslong undercover investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations that began in late 2023, authorities said.
According to an arrest report, an undercover FDLE agent made contact with brokers in Mexico known as “Nayarit” and “El Primo” while negotiating fentanyl deals. For the first undercover purchase, the organization sent 2,500 fentanyl pills, but the package was lost in the mail, investigators said.
The organization later sent a replacement shipment containing roughly 2,800 fentanyl pills weighing nearly 600 grams, which investigators said they received and confirmed contained fentanyl.
Prosecutors said the investigation later expanded into deals involving three kilograms of fentanyl powder and 20,000 pills for a total price of $124,000.
Investigators said “Primo” sent Caldera-Garcia to Florida to help deliver one of those fentanyl shipments in person.
Agents seize drugs in Palmetto, court records say
According to the arrest report, Caldera-Garcia met an undercover agent at a Sarasota McDonald’s in 2024 and accepted $2,000 in FDLE funds to cover transportation costs.
After the meeting, the undercover agent drove Caldera-Garcia to a Bank of America, where investigators said he deposited the money into an ATM. The agent then dropped him off at a nearby Walmart.
The next day, investigators seized a FedEx package at a Palmetto facility containing about 900 grams of “purple fentanyl,” according to authorities.
Prosecutors said Caldera-Garcia cut off contact and left Florida after the seizure. Investigators later identified him through debit card records from the Walmart purchase and California motor vehicle records, according to an arrest report.
The same investigation also involved a 27-year-old Panama City man accused of collecting $21,000 tied to a separate kilogram fentanyl shipment mailed to Bradenton inside a battery charger. According to the arrest report, investigators traced that shipment to another Mexico-based individual, whom they described as a suspected supplier in the organization.
Investigators said the Panama City man allegedly accepted the money at a Tampa Denny’s and discussed possible future cocaine deals before his arrest, though a Manatee County jury later acquitted him on trafficking and conspiracy charges, according to court records.
Caldera-Garcia’s convictions carried 25-year minimum mandatory sentences under Florida trafficking law.
Court records show Caldera-Garcia filed an appeal.
