A suspected vehicle burglary late Sunday night escalated after the suspect shot at Manatee County deputies, resulting in an hours-long manhunt, the sheriff’s office said.

Dayton Harris, 25, was arrested by Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies early Monday morning after the manhunt that lasted through the night, according to an arrest report. Harris was charged with armed burglary, aggravated assault on law enforcement, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.

According to a release from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a man wearing black and a ski mask breaking into vehicles in the Tire Kingdom parking lot on 52nd Place East in Bradenton just before midnight.

Harris fled on foot and fired a gun in the direction of the deputies, the media release states.

The incident resulted in a manhunt that required assistance from K-9 and aviation units. During the search, deputies recovered a firearm, ski mask and other evidence, according to the sheriff’s office.

A citizen reported seeing a man matching Harris’s description around 4:30 a.m. in an abandoned trailer in the Westwinds Village mobile home park. Deputies say they arrested Harris with K-9 assistance, without further incident.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed.
