Cortez man charged after killing father while showing off gun, deputies say
A man is facing a manslaughter charge after fatally shooting his 76-year-old father Tuesday in what he told deputies was an accident, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they responded shortly before noon to the 12300 block of Baypointe Terrace in Cortez, where they found 35-year-old Ian Douglas trying to help his father, Andrew Douglas, after shooting him in the neck.
Emergency crews attempted life-saving measures but pronounced Andrew Douglas dead at 12:20 p.m., deputies said.
Investigators said Ian Douglas told them the gun fired accidentally while he was showing it to his father. After further investigation, detectives charged him with manslaughter by culpable negligence, a second-degree felony, according to a news release.
Deputies booked Douglas into the Manatee County Jail, where he remains held without bond, according to the sheriff’s office website.
The shooting investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s office said.
