Bradenton man arrested after fatal DUI motorcycle crash, police say
A Bradenton man faces DUI manslaughter charges after police say he showed signs of impairment and crashed into a motorcycle late Monday night, killing a passenger and seriously injuring the rider.
Investigators say Milton May, 52, left a local business shortly before 10:15 p.m, driving east on 42nd Avenue West. Around 10:37 p.m., police say he turned into the path of a northbound motorcycle at the intersection of 59th Street West, causing a crash that shut down the 4200 block of 59th St. W. for several hours Monday night.
A 35-year-old Palmetto woman, who was riding as a passenger on the motorcycle, died from her injuries, according to a news release. Police say the 28-year-old driver, a Bradenton man, was critically injured and remains in the intensive care unit as of Tuesday afternoon.
Traffic Homicide and Crime Scene Investigation teams responded to the scene, which closed 59th St. W. between Cortez Road and 40th Avenue West until about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, according to a social media post by the Bradenton Police Department.
May stayed at the scene but showed signs of impairment, police said. Police say May refused to perform field sobriety tests, so officers arrested him and took him to a hospital, where they collected a blood sample under a warrant. Investigators said they are still waiting on the results of his blood alcohol test.
Police plan to book May into the Manatee County jail once he receives medical clearance, according to a news release. In addition to DUI manslaughter, police say May is also charged with DUI with serious bodily injury. Additional charges are possible, police said.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or saw May on the night of the crash is asked to contact officer Ian Emrich at ian.emrich@bradentonpd.com.
The crash remains under investigation, according to police.
