A Bradenton man faces DUI manslaughter charges after police say he drove the wrong way on the DeSoto Bridge and crashed into a pregnant woman’s car, killing her unborn child and leaving her critically injured.

A wrong-way driver crashed head-on into a pregnant woman’s car on the DeSoto Bridge early Sunday, killing her unborn child and leaving her critically injured, Palmetto police said.

The Palmetto Police Department says Laurentino Serrano-Juarez, 31, of Bradenton, drove south in the northbound lanes of the DeSoto Bridge and crashed into the front of a sedan at 4:26 a.m Sunday. A 28-year-old pregnant woman from St. Petersburg was driving the sedan, according to a news release.

Paramedics brought both drivers to a local hospital. Doctors treated Serrano-Juarez and later released him into police custody, according to the release.

The woman remains hospitalized in critical condition. Her unborn child did not survive the crash, police say.

Police charged Serrano-Juarez with DUI manslaughter, DUI with serious bodily injury to another, DUI property damage and driving without a valid license, according to the sheriff’s office website. He is being held on $575,000 bond at the Manatee County Jail.
