A 31-year-old Bradenton man died Thursday evening after driving his pickup truck into a telephone pole while trying to escape arrest, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the fatal accident happened after the driver fled the scene of a separate crash on Lockwood Ridge Road in Sarasota County. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said the man, identified as Cody M. Burrow, was fleeing from deputies attempting to arrest him.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies tried to pull Burrow over around 5:38 p.m. near Beneva Road and Webber Road on a warrant for a felony drug charge. Instead of stopping, detectives say Burrow crashed his gray Ford F-150 into a Tesla and several sheriff’s office vehicles, injuring a deputy, before speeding off.

About 10 minutes later, deputies say they were called to a crash on Lockwood Ridge Road, about six miles from where they had last seen Burrow. Investigators said after pulling out of a driveway at University Club Apartments, Burrow had driven over the grassy median on Lockwood Ridge Road, crossed into the southbound lanes and veered onto the shoulder, where he crashed into a telephone pole.

Paramedics pronounced Burrow on the scene, according to a news release.

The injured deputy was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the sheriff’s office.

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
