Theft is on the rise for these vehicles in Bradenton, police say. Here’s what to know
Four teenagers have been arrested in Bradenton after being caught on surveillance footage driving stolen vehicles, police say.
The arrests come as part of a recent trend targeting vehicles made by two car manufacturers. Since August, there have been 12 thefts and 14 attempted thefts involving Kias and Hyundais in Bradenton, according to police.
The Bradenton Police Department says these vehicles are targeted because certain models lack immobilizers, a critical anti-theft device that prevents cars from starting without the correct key.
Kia vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2021 and Hyundai vehicles made between 2015 and 2021 are particularly vulnerable. Both automakers are offering free anti-theft software upgrades, with some Kia owners also eligible to receive free steering-wheel locks, according to a news release.
In a video obtained by Bradenton police, officials say two teens wearing black hoodies can be seen getting into what police say are stolen cars. Police say four teenagers were arrested for driving two stolen cars while attempting to steal a third vehicle.
Police are encouraging all drivers to park in well-lit areas, preferably near security cameras and always to lock their vehicles. They also advise removing valuables and firearms from cars to reduce the risk of theft.
