A 23-year-old Sarasota man who shot and killed someone outside a grocery store in 2022 pleaded guilty to 35 years in prison in a Sarasota County courtroom on Monday.

Sarasota police said it was shortly after midnight on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022 when Johnny Evans killed a man outside of Moore’s Grocery on the 1900 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Newtown, a community in North Sarasota.

Detectives say Evans shot the man twice before fleeing in his father’s 1997 Toyota Camry and then obtaining a rental car to flee farther.

He managed to stay away from law enforcement for around two months before detectives tracked him and arrested him in Greenville, Mississippi, on Feb. 5, 2022, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Evans had a Stand Your Ground hearing before Judge Dana Moss on July 14, 2023, which resulted in a jury trial on July 24, where he pleaded guilty to murder, according to a press release issued by the Sarasota Police Department on Tuesday.
